This short prayer for a generous heart is for the moments when you feel tight-fisted with your time, money, patience, or attention, and you want God to soften those places in you. You can pray it in the morning before the day’s demands begin, at the start of a week when you already see the needs piling up, or just before you reach for your wallet at a church offering or a neighbor’s door. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words.

Short Prayer for a Generous Heart

Father, you gave us your own Son, and you have never once measured out your love in small portions. I confess that my heart often counts things I should be sharing. I notice the grocery receipt, the hours on the calendar, the favor I think I am owed, and I hold on to them more tightly than I should. Some of that comes from fear that there will not be enough, and some of it comes from simply forgetting how much you have already given me.

So I ask you to open my hands. Show me the person who needs a meal, a ride, a listening ear, or a kind word this week, and give me the courage to say yes without rehearsing all the reasons to say no. Where I am stingy with my money, loosen my grip. Where I am stingy with my time, interrupt my schedule. Where I am stingy with forgiveness or patience, remind me that I have been forgiven far more than I will ever need to give away. Let my giving come from gratitude rather than guilt, and let it be cheerful when no one is watching. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am keeping too much for myself today. Loosen my grip on what is mine, and open my eyes to the person in front of me who needs something I can give. Make me willing before I am able to explain why I am not. Thank you for giving so freely to me. Amen.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Read this verse slowly and ask God to help you find real joy in giving rather than merely feeling obligated. Thank him for the many ways he has already blessed you through others who gave.

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

Pray this verse with open hands. Ask God to make you someone who gives without fear of running short, trusting that his provision is larger than your fear of scarcity.

1 John 3:17-18

17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him? 18 My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

Let this passage move your prayer from feeling to action. Ask God to show you one concrete need this week that you can meet, and to make your love more than words.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment that already exists in your day, such as while the coffee brews, during the drive to work, or before you open your bank app or your calendar. Keep a pen near your Bible or your phone so you can jot down a name when God brings one to mind. Holding something in your hands while you pray, like a coin, a grocery list, or a stack of cards you plan to write notes on, can help turn a vague wish into a real choice.

This prayer also works well shared. Read it together with a spouse or a friend who struggles with the same tightness, or pray it with a small group before you plan a meal or a volunteer shift. Asking someone to pray with you for a generous heart can make it easier to follow through when the moment to give actually arrives.

A Blessing to Close

May God who gave everything for you fill your hands with more than you can hold, and may his generosity flow through you to the people around you. May your heart grow lighter as you give, and may you find that the Lord who provides for you is faithful to provide for the ones you serve as well.
