This short prayer for letting go is for the moments when you are carrying something you were never meant to carry alone, whether that is a worry, a grudge, a loss, or a situation outside your control. Pray it when you feel tight in your chest, when you find yourself replaying the same thought, or at the close of a hard day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Letting Go

Father, I come to you tired from holding on. I have been gripping the outcome of things I cannot control: the conversation that went badly, the diagnosis I keep rehearsing, the money I cannot make stretch, the people I cannot change. My hands are full, and I am worn out from trying to carry all of it by myself. Show me what is mine to do today and what is already yours.

Loosen my grip, Lord. Where I have held onto anger, help me set it down, and where I have held onto fear, help me trust that you see what I cannot see. I do not need to understand everything before I rest. Teach me to open my hands and let you take what I have been trying to fix. Let the weight move off my shoulders and onto yours, where it belongs.

Thank you that you are not put off by my anxious heart, and that you invite me to bring every burden to you. Quiet my mind, steady my breathing, and remind me that I am known and held. I release this into your care now, and I ask you to keep what I give you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am holding on too tightly again. I give you this worry, this hurt, and this need for control. Take what I cannot carry and help me breathe. Give me enough courage for the next step and nothing more. I trust you with what remains. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel crushed by a weight that keeps returning. Name the specific burden out loud and ask God to take it, then rest in the promise that he sustains the one who has cast the weight onto him.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Read these words slowly as an invitation rather than a command. Bring the heaviness you are carrying and ask Jesus to show you what a lighter yoke looks like in your own daily routine.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Let this verse help you name your anxieties one by one. As you list each worry, pray that God would receive it, remembering that he cares for you personally and not in a distant or general way.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage as a pattern for prayer: bring the request, thank God for something already true, and then wait for the peace that guards the heart. Pray it slowly when a situation feels too big to surrender.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your mind keeps racing ahead. Ask God to fix your thoughts on him rather than on the outcome, and return to his faithfulness each time your attention drifts back to the problem.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment, such as the first few minutes after you wake or the space before you fall asleep. Sit with your feet on the floor and let your hands rest open on your lap, or hold something ordinary like a warm cup of tea. The physical act of opening your hands can help your heart follow.

If you are praying with someone else, ask them to read the prayer aloud while you listen, or invite a friend or family member to pray it over you when you feel too worn out to speak. Write the words on a card and keep it in your wallet or on your phone, so you can return to it on the hard days.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who receives every burden give you rest for your soul. May he loosen what you have been clutching, steady your heart in the hours ahead, and walk with you into whatever comes next. You are held, and you are not alone.
