This simple prayer for a teenage son is written for parents, grandparents, stepparents and mentors who want to lift a growing boy to God when the teenage years feel loud, uncertain or far away. Pray it in the car, at the kitchen sink, or at bedtime after he has gone to his room. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put his name and your own worries into the blanks.

Simple Prayer for a Teenage Son

Lord, thank you for the son you have given me. I know he is growing faster than I can keep up with, and some days I don’t recognize the boy I used to drive to soccer practice. Be near him when friends pull him one way and his own restlessness pulls him another. Give him honest friends, wise voices, and the courage to walk away from what is cheap or cruel.

Watch over his mind and his phone, his grades, his sleep and his temper. Where he feels small, remind him of who he belongs to. Where he feels proud, bring him low enough to learn. Help him to speak kindly to his brothers and sisters, to respect his teachers, and to work hard even when nobody is grading him. Keep him safe on the roads and on the internet, and keep his heart soft toward you.

And Lord, when he makes a mistake, as every teenager does, let me respond with patience and not panic. Help us both to tell the truth and to forgive quickly. Hold him when I cannot, and let him know he is loved without conditions. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my son is in your hands today. Guard his going out and his coming in. Give him wisdom for the choices no one sees, and steady his heart when he feels alone or angry. Help him trust you more than his own opinions, and help me trust you with him. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

When your son doubts his worth or compares himself to others, pray these words over him. Ask the Lord to remind him that he was carefully made and is known by his Creator.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Teenagers carry worries they may not name. Pray that your son would bring his anxieties to God rather than carrying them alone, and that God’s peace would guard his thoughts through the day.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

Ask God to give your son wisdom for school decisions, friendships and choices he has never faced before. Pray that he would ask God for help instead of only asking his friends.

Ephesians 6:1-4

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.” 4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Use this passage to pray for the relationship between you and your son. Ask God to soften both of your hearts so that honor, correction and encouragement can flow in both directions.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time when your son is usually at home but not in the middle of an argument, such as the drive to school or the quiet minutes after you turn out his light. Keep a note on your phone with his name and two or three specific concerns, so your prayer stays grounded in his real life rather than general worry. If you have a pencil nearby, write the date beside each prayer. Over months you will be surprised to see how God has answered.

Invite others to pray with you. A spouse, a friend from church, or a youth leader who knows him can pray the same words for him on their own days. Teenagers often respond better to a praying adult than to a lecture, so consider telling him that you are praying for him, without making him perform or report back.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this young man and keep him in every season ahead. May he know that he is seen, that he is loved, and that his life has a purpose larger than his worst day. May his parents rest in the faithfulness of the One who has been watching over him all along.
