This simple prayer for our church is written for a congregation that wants to pray together for its members, its leaders, and the life of the community it belongs to. It works well before a Sunday service, at a midweek gathering, or during a quiet moment at home when you are thinking about the people you worship with. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for Our Church

Lord, you are the one who gathers people together and makes them into a body. We come to you today thinking about the church we belong to. We thank you for the people who sit beside us each week, including the ones we know well and the ones we are still getting to know. Be with the children and young people who are learning about you, and with the older members who have walked with you for many years. Give them patience with one another and a willingness to forgive when it is hard.

We pray for our pastors, elders, and volunteers who carry responsibilities most of us never see. Give them wisdom when decisions are difficult, rest when they are worn out, and encouragement when their work feels unnoticed. Protect the families who are struggling with illness, grief, job loss, or loneliness, and let us be quick to notice their needs and slow to judge them. Make our building a place of welcome for anyone who walks through the doors looking for hope. Let our words and our generosity point people toward you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless our church today. Keep our leaders close to you, help our members love one another well, and draw new people to hear your word. Where there is grief, comfort. Where there is fear, peace. Where there is pride, humility. Let us be a people who serve you together and show your kindness to the people around us. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

A good time to pray this prayer is early on a Sunday morning, before the doors open, or on a weeknight when a small group of members can meet in the sanctuary or a living room. Hold a printed copy in your hands so your attention stays on the words rather than drifting. If you are praying alone, pause after each paragraph and name a specific person or ministry from your church that comes to mind.

You might also invite others to pray it with you. Read one paragraph each, passing the page around a circle of friends, a Sunday school class, or a board meeting. Ask someone to close the prayer with a short personal request, then say Amen together. Over time, you may find that the prayer gives you language for things you struggled to put into words before.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gathers his people keep your church close to his heart. May he strengthen every leader, comfort every member carrying a heavy load, and welcome every stranger who comes looking for a home. May the peace of Christ rule among you and make your fellowship a living sign of his love.
