This prayer is for the moment when you want to be grateful but your heart feels tired, distracted or stuck on what is missing. Pray it in the morning before the day fills up, in the evening when you look back over it, or whenever you notice complaint rising in you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Grateful Heart

Father, I come to you with a heart that is not as thankful as I wish it were. Some mornings I wake up already counting what has gone wrong: the bills, the tension at work, the friend who has not called back, the health worry I cannot shake. I ask you to open my eyes to what you have already given, including the ordinary things I have stopped noticing, like a warm cup of coffee, a working body, and people who love me even when I forget to say so.

Lord, soften the places in me that have grown hard with comparison and disappointment. Teach me to name one true good thing each day and to receive it as a gift from your hand rather than a debt I am owed. When I cannot find words of thanks, let my gratitude rest on the simple fact that you are good, faithful and near, even in the hard seasons. Make my heart quick to notice your kindness and slow to grumble.

Thank you for your patience with me, for your steady love and for the countless ways you provide for me without my asking. Help me carry that thankfulness into my conversations, my work and my home. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tempted to focus only on what I lack right now. Turn my eyes to what you have already done and given. Let one good thing, however small, rise up in my heart as a reason to thank you. Thank you that you are with me in this moment. Help me to be grateful today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul pairs thankfulness with God’s will for believers, which lets you pray for a grateful heart as something you are asking God to shape in you, not a feeling you must manufacture on your own.

Psalm 107:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

Use this verse to begin your prayer by naming the basic reason for thanks: God is good and his faithful love has not run out. Let that truth set the tone before you list your particular needs.

Psalm 103:2

Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits…

(WEB)

The psalmist calls himself to remember God’s benefits. Pray this verse slowly, pausing after each phrase to recall a specific kindness you have received this week.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Ask God to let his peace settle your heart so that thankfulness can grow out of that calm. This verse links gratitude with an inner settledness you can pray for during an anxious day.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Paul shows that prayer and thanksgiving belong together when you bring your worries to God. Use this verse to turn a list of requests into a prayer that also gives thanks for his answers already given.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a steady time, such as before breakfast or just before bed, and find a chair where you can sit without rushing. Keep a pen and paper nearby, and after you pray, write down one thing you noticed as a gift that day. Let your hands rest open on your lap or hold a small object that reminds you of God’s care, so your body joins the prayer along with your mind.

If thankfulness feels far away, pray this prayer with a friend or family member and take turns naming one good thing each. Ask someone who knows you well to pray it over you when you are struggling to see God’s goodness. Returning to the same words over several weeks can slowly reshape how you notice your days.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord open your eyes to his goodness in the ordinary moments of this day. May he fill your heart with a quiet, growing thankfulness that does not depend on how your circumstances look. May he keep you steady, guard your peace and remind you again and again that you are deeply loved.
