If you are searching for prayers for a new father, this page gives you a written prayer you can pray on behalf of a dad who has just welcomed a child, or pray yourself as a new father. It is meant for the early weeks and months, when sleep is short, the days blur together, and worry comes easily. You can read the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for a New Father

Lord, thank you for this child and for the gift of becoming a father. I come before you tonight tired, and some of my tiredness is in my body and some of it is in my heart. I don’t always know what I’m doing. I wonder if I’m holding the baby the right way, if I am feeding enough, if I am enough for the little one and for the person who is recovering from a long and hard day of her own. Give me patience when the crying goes on past midnight, and give me gentleness when my voice gets short.

Father God, help me to be present rather than only busy. Let me notice the small things: the weight of a sleeping child against my chest, the way my partner looks at me when I’ve done something well, the quiet of the house after the last feed. Guard my mind from comparing myself to other dads, and remind me that I don’t have to be perfect to be loving. Steady my hands for the everyday work of changing, rocking, and carrying. Strengthen my marriage through these changes, and help us to speak kindly and listen well to one another.

Thank you that you know this child by name and that you are not surprised by anything we face. When I feel afraid of getting it wrong, remind me that you are a good Father, and that you care for your children more than I ever could. Teach me to lean on you each day. Give me wisdom, peace, and a grateful heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and a little scared, and I need you right now. Steady me for the next feed and the next hour. Help me be calm, kind, and present for my child and for my family. Thank you for this little life you have given us. Remind me that I am not doing this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that children are a gift and that he entrusted this child to your family. Ask him to help you receive each day as a blessing rather than a burden.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Use this verse to picture God gently carrying the lambs close to his heart. Ask him to help you lead and hold your child with that same tenderness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When you wake to another long night, pray this verse by thanking God that his mercies are new each morning. Ask him to meet you again with fresh strength before the day begins.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring your uncertainty to God in the words of this verse. Ask him for wisdom about feeding, sleep, discipline, and how to care for your partner as you learn together.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage when worry starts to crowd out sleep. Give God each specific fear, one by one, and ask him to guard your heart with the peace that only he can give.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many new fathers find that the quietest moments are the best for prayer: during a night feed, while the bottle warms, or in the car on the way home from a clinic visit. Keep the words somewhere you can see them on your phone, or say them from memory while you rock your child. You do not need a special posture or a long stretch of time. Speaking the prayer softly while you walk the hallway is enough.

If you are praying for a new father rather than as one, consider reading the prayer aloud while your hands are busy with a task such as folding laundry or preparing a bottle. You might also invite his partner, a close friend, or a grandparent to pray it with him over the phone or in person. Hearing someone else speak these words over him can be a real encouragement on the days he feels like he is failing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this new father with strength for each long night and joy in each small moment. May he be surrounded by people who encourage him, and may he rest in the knowledge that he is loved. May the Lord keep his heart steady and his home full of peace.
