This Christian prayer for love is written for the times when you want to love well but feel short on patience, warmth or courage. Pray it in the morning before the day’s relationships begin, or in the evening when you are reviewing how you treated the people you live with. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Christian Prayer for Love
Father, thank you for loving me first. Before I ever chose to love anyone, you had already shown me what love looks like, and I need that reminder today. I confess that I often love with conditions. I want the people close to me to be easier, more grateful, more like me, and when they fall short I pull back my warmth without meaning to. Soften that part of my heart. Show me where I have been keeping score, and give me the grace to put it down.
Lord, I pray for the people I will see today: my family, my coworkers, the neighbor whose name I still do not know, and the person who has hurt me and whom I would rather avoid. Give me eyes to notice their needs and ears to hear what they are not saying. When I am tired, let your patience carry me. When I want to be right more than I want to be kind, remind me whose I am. Fill me with a love that is patient and gentle, that does not insist on its own way, and that keeps showing up even when no one thanks me. Let my words and my actions point people toward your goodness. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, pour your love into me so that it can flow out to the people in front of me. Help me to be patient when I am frustrated, kind when I am tired, and honest without being harsh. Turn my attention from my own need to the need of the person next to me. Let someone feel genuinely seen by me today, and let that be because of you. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Read this slowly and turn each quality into a request. Ask God to make you patient where you are usually short, and kind in the moments you would normally be sharp.
1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.
(WEB)
Pray this as a reminder that your love is a response to God’s love for you. Ask him to let that love come first in your day, so that you are not trying to produce warmth from your own supply.
John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask Jesus to make his command real in your ordinary relationships. Pray that others would recognize his disciples by the way you treat them.
Romans 12:9-10
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good. 10 In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…
(WEB)
Pray this for the places where love has become routine or hollow. Ask God to make your affection sincere and to help you honor the people around you, not just tolerate them.
Ephesians 3:17-19
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
(WEB)
Pray this for yourself and for someone you struggle to love. Ask that God’s love would be rooted and established so deeply in you that you could never fully measure it.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying the longer version while you are sitting with your coffee before the house wakes up, or in your car before you walk into work. Having a physical anchor helps: hold a cup, rest a hand on your Bible, or write the verses on an index card and tuck it in your pocket. Choose one line of the prayer that speaks to you most and repeat it through the day when you feel your patience running low.
You might also pray this with someone else. A spouse, a close friend or a small group can take turns reading a line each, and the prayer becomes a shared commitment to love one another. If you are praying for someone who has hurt you, name them in the prayer and ask God to bless them specifically. This is not a denial of what happened; it is an invitation for God to work in both of your hearts.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord fill you with a love that is patient, kind and steady. May he show you the people around you as he sees them, and give you courage to draw near to them. May his peace guard your heart as you love well, and may you feel his presence in every ordinary kindness you offer today.
