This morning prayer is for the day ahead, the first honest words you bring to God before the calendar, the phone and the people take over. Pray it as soon as you are awake, sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with your first cup. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own concerns in the same spirit.

Morning Prayer for Today

Lord, I am waking up to a day I have not lived yet, and I do not know everything it will hold. You know. Before I open my messages or think about the list in my head, I want to put this day in your hands. Be the first voice I hear this morning, and let your peace settle on me before the noise begins.

Help me with the specific things I already know are coming. Give me patience with the person who will test it at work, wisdom in the decisions I have to make by noon, and enough energy to finish what I promised. Be near the people I love who are carrying hard things today, and let me be gentle with them when I see them. When I feel behind before I have even started, remind me that you are not in a hurry, and neither should I be in the way I speak and act.

Father, I also bring you the parts of me that I would rather hide: the worry about money, the irritation I already feel, the small fear that I will fail in front of someone I respect. Take those from me and replace them with trust. Guide my steps, keep my tongue kind, and let me leave this day a little more like you than I found it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this is my day and I am giving it to you. Go before me into the meetings, the errands and the hard conversations. Keep me patient, honest and kind when I am tired. Help me notice the people you put in my path, and let me trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when yesterday’s failures are still heavy. Thank God that his mercies are new this morning, and ask him to let you start the day without carrying yesterday’s shame into it.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Use this verse to slow down before the rush begins. Ask God to quiet the anxious chatter in your mind so you can recognize his presence in the middle of an ordinary, busy day.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the decisions you face today. Name them to God one by one, and ask him to make your paths straight as you trust him rather than your own quick judgment.

Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

(WEB)

This is a good verse for the first moments of the morning. Ask God to let you hear his steadfast love early, so that you know which way to walk before the day asks you to decide.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this over the things that are already making you anxious for the day. Hand each worry to God in prayer and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you keep going.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it before you check your phone, if you can. Sit somewhere quiet, such as the edge of the bed, a chair by the window, or the kitchen table before the household wakes. Keep a pen nearby and write down the two or three tasks or people that worry you most, then pray over that short list by name. Many people find that naming the specific meeting, the difficult sibling or the deadline makes the prayer feel real rather than general.

If you live with others, read the prayer aloud at breakfast and invite them to add a sentence of their own. Parents can pray it over children as they head out the door, changing the pronouns as they go. If you are alone, try touching your hands together or resting them open on your lap, a simple way to show that you are receiving the day rather than grabbing at it. Come back to the prayer at lunch if the morning went sideways.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you today and walk beside you through every hour. May he give you clear sight for what matters, steady hands for what must be done, and a warm heart for the people you meet. May his peace hold you when the day is loud, and may you rest in the assurance that you are never walking alone.
