This night prayer is for anyone who wants to close the day in peace, setting down its worries and asking God for rest before sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s tasks are finished, or in bed when your mind will not slow down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where something fits your evening better.
Night Prayer for a Peaceful Day
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you. Thank you for the hours I was given, for the small kindnesses that came my way, and for the strength you gave me when I needed it. I also bring you what did not go well: the message I never answered, the conversation that went badly, the work that is still waiting for me tomorrow. Take these from my hands. I do not need to carry them into the night, because you are awake when I am not.
Quiet my thoughts now. Where my mind keeps replaying the day or rehearsing tomorrow’s problems, settle it, and turn my attention toward you. Watch over the people I love while they sleep, and over the ones I worry about most. Guard my home and my body through the dark hours, and give me sleep that is deep and unbroken. Let me wake refreshed and ready to face what comes, trusting that you have already gone ahead of me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired, and this day is ending. Thank you for being with me through it. Take the worries I am still holding and give me rest. Keep the people I love safe tonight, and keep me safe too. Let me sleep in your peace and wake in your care. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting each phrase slow your breathing. It reminds you that rest is something God gives, not something you must manufacture by force of will.
Psalm 3:5
I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

Read this slowly as a testimony of trust. Name the specific fears that keep you awake, and tell God you are choosing to sleep because he sustains you.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Let this verse remind you that the work of the day does not have to be finished tonight. Hand the unfinished tasks to God and accept the rest he offers.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Pray this as a request for protection through the night. Picture God keeping watch while you sleep, and ask him to guard your household until morning.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring your weariness directly to Jesus in this verse. Speak your tiredness aloud and receive his invitation to rest as a gift rather than a task.
How to Pray This Prayer
Set aside a few minutes at the end of the day, after the last screen is put down and before you turn out the light. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a quiet chair, and hold something simple in your hands, such as a folded blanket, a cup of water, or your own clasped fingers, to help you stay present. If your mind wanders, return to the first line and continue from there.
This prayer can also be shared. A spouse, roommate, or child can pray it over the household together, taking turns with the lines. Parents may pray it over sleeping children, adding the names of each one. Whoever prays it, let the closing words be spoken slowly so the silence afterward has room to settle.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep you through this night and be your peace when your thoughts grow loud. May you lie down without fear and wake to a morning filled with his mercy. Rest well, for you are held.
