This is a simple prayer for a sick friend, written to bring their illness, fear and needs before God in plain words. You can pray it in the morning, at the bedside, on the phone or quietly in your car before a visit. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak from your own heart.

Simple Prayer for a Sick Friend

Lord, you know my friend and you know exactly where it hurts. You see the pain in their body, the tiredness that sits on them like a weight, and the nights when sleep will not come. We ask you to be near to them now. Touch them with your healing where it is needed, and give the doctors and nurses wisdom and steady hands as they care for them.

Father, I also bring the worries they may not say out loud. They may be afraid of what the test results will show, or of being a burden to the people they love. They may wonder whether they will get better or what their life will look like. Calm those fears with your presence. Remind them that they are not alone and that you have not forgotten them for a single moment.

Give them rest in their body and peace in their mind. Strengthen the family and friends who are carrying this with them, and help me to show up in the ways that actually matter. Whatever happens next, let them feel your love close enough to hold. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is sick and I am asking you to help them. Ease their pain, calm their fear and bring healing in your time. Surround them with people who care and give the doctors wisdom. Let them know you are with them right now, in every hour of this. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God sustaining a person who is ill and restoring them on their sickbed. Pray it over your friend by asking God to hold them up through the weakest days and to bring them back to strength.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Here the psalmist describes God as one who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Pray this for your friend’s hurt, both the physical kind and the sorrow that comes with being unwell.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s promise to be with his people and strengthen them is especially meaningful in fear. Pray it slowly for your friend, asking God to remind them that they are not alone in the frightening moments.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

James encourages the church to pray for the sick and to gather around them in faith. Use this passage to ask God to work through both prayer and the community that surrounds your friend.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul heard God say that his grace is enough in weakness. Pray this for your friend when they feel too tired or frail to go on, that God’s strength would be made known in their limits.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time of day, such as early morning or the evening before bed, when you can slow down and speak to God without rushing. Keep a glass of water or a cup of tea near you, and hold it while you pray so your hands have something to do. If you are sitting beside your friend, you might rest a hand on their arm or hold their hand as you pray, but only if they welcome it.

Ask someone else to pray this prayer with you, or let them know you will be praying for your friend at a set time each day. Send a short text afterward saying you prayed for them, so they know their needs are being carried. Consistency often matters more than length, so a few honest words said every day can be a steady gift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friend and keep them safe in every hour. May his face shine on them with grace, and may he give them peace that steadies the heart. May the people who love them be strengthened, and may you, who pray for them, be held close by the same faithful God.
