This night prayer is for the hours before sleep when a big choice is still open: a job offer, a move, a marriage, a medical option, a purchase that will shape the years ahead. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit. It is short enough to pray in bed with the lights off.

Night Prayer for an Important Decision

Lord, the day is ending and the decision is still in front of me. I have turned it over at the kitchen sink, in the car, and in the quiet moments between tasks, and I am tired of going around in circles. I do not know what the right answer is tonight. I do know that you see the whole picture, including the parts I cannot see, and I am grateful that I do not have to see it all to rest in you.

Please quiet the noise in my mind. Take away the fear of getting it wrong and the pressure to get it perfect. Show me what is true, what is wise, and what matters most to you and to the people I love. If I am leaning toward something that is not good for me or for them, make that clear to me gently. If I am holding back out of fear when you are asking me to step forward, give me the courage to take the step.

Guard my sleep tonight. Let my body rest and my thoughts settle, and let me wake to a new day with a clearer heart. Whatever I decide, help me trust that you are still at work in my life and in the outcome. Thank you for the times you have guided me before, and for the faithfulness I have already seen. In your name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I have a decision on my mind tonight and I cannot settle it on my own. Quiet my worry, give me clear sense, and help me rest in your care until morning. Show me the next right step and give me the peace to take it. Thank you that you hear me even when I am too tired for long words. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

This passage invites you to stop leaning only on your own understanding. As you pray it at night, you can name the specific choice you are facing and place it in God’s hands, asking him to make your paths straight.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James reminds us that wisdom is available for the asking, and that God gives generously without scolding us for needing it. Pray this verse by asking plainly for wisdom about the decision, trusting that you are welcome to ask again tomorrow.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

This verse is a promise of God’s instruction and watchful care. Read it slowly and let it become your prayer: ask God to teach you the way you should go and to keep his eye on you through the night.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and promises a peace that goes beyond understanding. When worry about a decision keeps you awake, bring each specific concern to God as a request, then receive the peace he gives as you fall asleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm reminds us that rest is a gift from God and that we do not have to carry every outcome ourselves. Pray it as a release: name the decision, then give yourself permission to sleep while God keeps watch.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent place and time, such as your bed just before turning off the light or a chair by the window after the house is quiet. Keep a pen and a small notebook nearby. If the decision is weighing on you, write down the options and the one or two things you most fear, then pray over the list before you sleep. Writing often clears the mind enough to let rest come.

You can also pray this prayer with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a pastor. Ask them to pray it with you or for you, and agree to check in the next day about what you sense. Having another person pray alongside you can make the decision feel less like a burden you carry alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you rest tonight and guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. May he show you the way forward with clarity and kindness, and may you wake to find that his faithfulness has gone before you into this day. Sleep well, and trust that the one who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
