A night prayer for comfort is a short, honest prayer you can pray at bedtime when your mind is tired, your heart is heavy, or the quiet of the night makes your worries louder. It asks God to receive the day, to carry what you could not carry, and to give you rest. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add your own words for the particular things on your mind tonight.

Night Prayer for Comfort

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those moments. Some of it was hard, and I am tired of carrying the weight of it. I set down the conversations I replay, the decisions I am not sure I made well, and the worries about tomorrow that keep knocking at my mind. Please take them from my hands tonight, because I cannot fix everything, and I do not have to.

Be near me while I sleep. Guard my home and the people in it, and keep watch over those I love who are far away or going through something I cannot see. If sleep comes slowly, quiet my thoughts and let my body rest. If I wake in the dark with fear, remind me that you have not left my side. Let my last thought be of your faithfulness rather than my failures, and let my first thought in the morning be that your mercies are new again.

Thank you for holding the whole of my life, the parts I understand and the parts I do not. I trust you with the night. In the stillness I receive your peace, and I rest in your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and my mind will not settle. I give you the day and the worries I am carrying into the night. Hold what I cannot hold, guard my sleep, and let me wake in your care. Thank you for being awake when I cannot be. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime promise you can speak slowly, one phrase at a time. Let each part sink in: you lie down, you sleep, and the safety you need comes from the Lord alone. When your mind is restless, return to these words and let them quiet you.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Here the psalmist reminds us that rest is a gift God gives to those he loves. Pray this verse by naming the work you did not finish today and handing it to God. Ask him to give you rest as a gift rather than something you must earn.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the weary and burdened in plain, open terms. Pray this verse by naming your specific weight tonight, whether it is grief, fatigue, or fear. Then imagine laying each one down at his feet before you close your eyes.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with trust, not with the absence of problems. Pray it by bringing your racing thoughts to God one at a time and asking him to steady your mind on who he is. Notice where your attention drifts, and gently return it.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

These lines describe a God who does not sleep and does not doze while his people rest. Pray them for yourself and for someone you worry about tonight, naming them specifically. Let the picture of God keeping watch replace the picture of your own anxious vigilance.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer near the end of your evening, once the screens are off and the lights are low. Sitting on the edge of your bed with your feet on the floor, or lying down with a hand resting on your chest, can help your body settle as your words slow. If something specific is on your mind, such as a hard phone call or a sick relative, name it aloud before you begin so the prayer has a place to land.

You can also pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is struggling to sleep. Take turns reading a line each, or let one person pray while the other listens and rests. If you wake in the night and cannot get back to sleep, you can return to the shorter version and whisper it again until your breathing slows.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight grant you deep and restful sleep. May his peace settle over your home and every person under its roof. When you wake, may you find his mercy waiting for you, fresh as the morning and sure as his promise.
