This daily prayer for compassion is for the mornings when you feel impatient, distracted or numb toward the people around you, and for the moments when you realize your heart has grown hard. Pray it at the start of the day, before the phone and the to-do list take over, or in the car or at the sink whenever you need to soften. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Compassion

Father, I come to you before the day begins. You have shown me mercy I did not earn, and you have never waited for me to be worthy before you loved me. Please let that same mercy move through me today. I confess that I often look at the people in front of me and see only their demands, their delays and their mistakes. Open my eyes to see the tiredness behind a short answer, the worry behind a sharp word, and the loneliness behind a request that seems small.

Give me a soft heart and a steady hand. When my children, my coworkers, my neighbors or strangers ask something of me, help me to stop and really listen before I decide how to respond. Teach me to notice when someone is hurting, and give me the courage to speak kindly or to simply sit with them. Where I have been cold, forgive me, and where I have been quick to judge, make me slow to speak. Let my compassion be real, not a performance, and let it come from the love you have poured into me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, soften my heart right now. Show me the person who needs patience or kindness in this moment, and help me to see them as you do. Slow my tongue and quicken my care. Remind me that I have received much mercy, and let some of it flow through me to someone else today. Thank you for your faithfulness to me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words when you wake up tired or discouraged. Thank God that his compassion has not run out, and ask him to renew your own care for others as fresh as each new morning.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask God to clothe you with the qualities it describes. Name the specific people you will meet today and ask for each of these qualities to show up in how you treat them.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your prayer about what God actually asks of you. Ask him to help you act justly and love mercy in small, ordinary choices, not just in large moments you may never face.

Matthew 9:36

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.

(WEB)

Here Jesus looks at a crowd and feels compassion for them. Ask him to let you see the people around you the way he does, as people who are weary and in need of care.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when someone has hurt or frustrated you. Ask God to help you be kind and tender-hearted toward them, remembering how fully you have been forgiven.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version in the first quiet minutes of your morning, sitting with a cup of coffee or before you pick up your phone. If you have a few minutes at a red light or while the kettle boils, the shorter version works well. Keep your Bible open to one of the verses above, and let your eyes rest on the words while you pray. Many people find it helpful to pray with their hands open in their lap, as a reminder that they are receiving grace before they try to give it.

If you share a home with a spouse, roommate or children, you might pray it together at breakfast or read the blessing over one another before leaving the house. A friend or small group can also pray it for you on the days when your own heart feels most closed. Come back to this prayer whenever you notice irritation rising, and let each return be a fresh beginning rather than a sign that you have failed.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who is rich in mercy fill your heart with gentleness today. May he open your eyes to the people who need you, give you patience when you are tested, and remind you of the kindness you have received. May his compassion meet you in every hard moment and move through you to those around you.
