This night prayer is for anyone who goes to bed carrying a broken heart, whether the wound came from a betrayal, a death, a divorce, a friendship that ended, or a disappointment you have not yet found words for. Pray it in the quiet hours before sleep, when the day’s noise has settled and the hurt often feels loudest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Healing a Broken Heart

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the ache I have carried through it. I am tired of pretending I am fine. I miss what I lost, and some nights the missing feels like it will never stop. Tonight I simply give it to you, the grief, the anger, the questions I have no answers for, and the fear that I will never feel whole again.

Be near me while I sleep. Quiet the thoughts that replay the moment everything changed. Guard my heart when I cannot guard it myself, and keep the bitterness from taking root in the dark. Hold the people I am tempted to blame, and hold me too, because I need to be held. Let the mercy you promise to the brokenhearted reach the places in me that feel too tender to touch.

Give me rest tonight, even if the healing is slow. I trust that you are working in what I cannot see, and I trust that the morning will come with fresh mercy. Thank you that I am not alone in this room, and that you are not put off by my tears. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my heart is hurting tonight. I do not have the strength for long words. Please be close to me, and calm the ache that keeps me awake. Heal what is broken in ways only you can see, and let me sleep knowing I am held by you. Thank you for staying with me in the dark. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before bed and let it remind you that the Lord draws near to the hurting. Pray that nearness into the specific place where your heart aches tonight.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Speak this as a request, naming the wounds you carry. Ask God to be the one who binds up what has been torn open in you.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to sleep. Pray it as you lie down, asking God to give you peace that does not depend on the situation being resolved.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him. Bring him your exhaustion from grief, and let this invitation be your last thought before you close your eyes.

Isaiah 61:1

The Lord the LORD’s Spirit is on me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound…

(WEB)

This passage describes God’s care for the brokenhearted. Pray it over yourself, trusting that the one who sent this promise intends to bring healing to your heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot in your bedroom, ideally before you turn off the light. Sitting on the edge of the bed or lying down with your hand resting over your heart can help the words feel personal. If you find yourself crying, let the tears be part of the prayer rather than something to stop. You may also pray it with a trusted friend or spouse on the phone, taking turns reading a line each.

If sleep does not come, return to the shorter version and repeat it slowly. Some people keep a notebook by the bed and write one honest sentence to God each night, adding to it over the weeks. Over time you may notice that the prayers grow a little lighter, even when the grief remains.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is close to the brokenhearted sit with you through this night. May his peace settle over your thoughts and his protection surround your sleep. And may the morning bring you one small sign that the healing has already begun.
