This short prayer is for the moments when you want to love the people around you well but feel stretched, tired, or short on patience. It can be prayed in the morning before your day begins, in the car before a difficult conversation, or at night when you are reviewing how you treated someone. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to what is on your heart.

Short Prayer for Loving Others

Lord, you have loved me long before I ever loved anyone else, and I come to you admitting how often I fall short of that kind of love. Some people in my life are easy to care for, and others test every bit of my patience. There is the coworker who takes credit for my work, the family member who keeps bringing up old hurts, and the neighbor whose noise keeps me awake. Show me where I have been impatient, quick to judge, or unwilling to forgive. Soften my heart toward them and help me see them the way you see them.

Give me words that build up instead of tear down, and the restraint to hold back the sharp reply that rises so easily. When I am tempted to keep score, remind me how much I have been forgiven. Help me to listen before I speak, to serve without needing thanks, and to notice the people who are quietly struggling. Let my love be practical and real, shown in small kindnesses as well as big gestures. I cannot do this in my own strength, so I ask you to pour your love through me today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, help me love the person in front of me right now. Slow my reactions, open my ears, and soften my tone. Show me one small thing I can do for them today, and give me the grace to do it without expecting anything back. Let your love move through me in ordinary moments. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn each quality into a request. Ask God to make you patient where you are not, kind where you are short, and free from the habit of keeping a list of wrongs.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

(WEB)

Jesus gave this as a command, not a suggestion. Pray that his love would become the measure you use with the people you find hardest to love.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

This verse describes affection and honor as a daily practice. Ask God to show you how to give others that kind of honor, especially in the small, unseen parts of your week.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul connects compassion and forgiveness with the way God has treated us. Pray that you would clothe yourself in these qualities and be willing to bear with others as you have been borne with.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

Love for others begins with God’s love for us. Pray that you would receive his love deeply enough that it spills over into how you treat the people around you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, while the house is quiet or during a few minutes in the car before work. Keep a pen nearby and write down one name of someone you find difficult. Pray for that person by name as you finish, asking God to bless them and to show you one specific way to love them that day.

You can also pray it with your hands busy, such as while washing dishes, folding laundry, or walking the dog. When you feel irritation rising during the day, pause and pray the shorter version silently. A spouse, friend, or small group could pray it together, taking turns reading each paragraph and asking for God’s help in their own relationships.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord fill you with a love that is patient, kind, and generous, and may he help you see every person you meet as someone he cares for deeply. May his peace guard your heart when others are hard to love, and may you find his strength enough for each new day.
