This evening prayer for my daughter is written to be spoken at bedtime, once the house has gone quiet and the day is done. You can read it aloud exactly as it stands, or use it as a starting point and put her name, her worries and her small victories into your own words. It takes about three minutes and asks God to take the weight of the day off both of you before you sleep.

Evening Prayer for My Daughter

Lord, thank you for the day that is ending. Thank you for the moments we had together, the laughter over breakfast, the homework that finally got finished, the hug at the door. Thank you for every small mercy I almost missed because I was too busy to notice. Now I bring her to you, the child you have given me to love and raise. Some of what she carried today was heavy. Maybe it was a friend who turned cold, a test she is afraid of, a body that doesn’t feel right, or a question about who she is becoming. I don’t have to name every worry for you to know it. Take each one from her hands and hold it for her.

Father, I ask you to guard her sleep. Let her mind settle the way a stone settles in still water. If thoughts run in circles, quiet them. If fear wakes her in the night, be closer than the fear. Surround her room with your peace, and let her wake tomorrow rested and ready to meet whatever comes. Keep her safe from harm, from hurtful words, and from the lies that tell her she is not enough. Give her a deep sense that she is loved, seen and never alone, both now and in the morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, she is tired, and so am I. Lay your hand on her head and let her rest in you. Take the worries she couldn’t put down today and carry them for her through the night. Guard her heart, guard her dreams, and wake her tomorrow with your strength and a fresh sense of your love. Keep her close, and keep me close to you too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over her as you tuck her in, asking God to give her a sleep that is safe and undisturbed. Let the words remind both of you that rest is a gift from the Lord, not something we must earn by getting everything right.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the anxious parent who lies awake running through every problem. Ask God to help you release your own striving and trust him with the things you cannot control in her life.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn each worry you have for her into a short, specific request. Thank God for an answer you already see, then ask him to guard her heart and mind with a peace that makes no sense on paper.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Picture God as a shepherd gathering lambs close to his chest. Pray that she would know she is held tenderly, and that you would be able to hold her the same way when the day is hard.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Offer this verse as a promise of protection through the dark hours. Ask God to keep watch over her while you sleep, trusting that his care never grows drowsy or distracted.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this just after you turn off the light, sitting on the edge of her bed with one hand on her back or her shoulder. Physical touch can help a restless child settle, and it keeps your attention on her rather than your phone. If she is old enough, invite her to add one thing she is thankful for or one worry she wants to give to God. Let her words become part of the prayer.

If you are not the only adult in her life, consider asking a spouse, grandparent or friend to pray this with her on the nights you are away. Keep a copy somewhere you will see it, such as the inside of a closet door or the kitchen counter, so the words are ready even on exhausting evenings when your memory runs thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless her and keep her through this night. May he make his face shine upon her and give her peace that carries into tomorrow. May she wake knowing she is deeply loved, fully known and held in the faithful care of God.
