This short prayer for my father is written for the moments when you want to bring your dad before God but do not know where to begin. It works well in the early morning, at a bedside, during a phone call that ended too quickly, or on a quiet drive home. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once the first lines have opened the way.

Short Prayer for My Father

Lord, you know my father better than I do. You know the long days he has worked, the choices he has carried quietly, and the worries he has never fully put into words. Today I bring him to you as he is. Give him rest where he is weary, and peace where his mind keeps running ahead of what is real. Steady his heart and his body, and keep him close to the people who love him.

Where he feels distant from you, draw near to him. Where he has made mistakes he regrets, meet him with mercy and help him receive it. Give him wisdom for the decisions in front of him and courage for the ones he is afraid to face. Let him know, even in the quiet hours, that he is not alone and that you have not stopped caring for him. Thank you for the gift of his life, and for the years he has given to others. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you see my dad right now, in this exact moment. Hold him in your care. Ease what hurts, calm what is anxious, and strengthen what is weak. Give him a sense of your nearness that does not depend on how he feels. Keep his heart open to you and his days filled with your goodness. Thank you that he belongs to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Pray this passage over your father as a reminder that the Lord provides what he needs and leads him toward restoration. Ask God to make his days feel less like a struggle and more like a place of rest.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your father is carrying worry he cannot set down. Ask that he would bring each concern to God in prayer and receive a peace that stays steady when circumstances do not.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for your dad when his strength is running low. Ask God to give him new energy and endurance, and to remind him that waiting on the Lord is never wasted.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the blessing God gave Moses to speak over his people. Speak it over your father slowly, asking that God’s face would shine toward him and that he would know the Lord’s favor.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this when your father feels cut off or unworthy of love. Ask him to hear again that nothing in life or death can separate him from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray for their father at a set time each day, such as first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee or just before bed. Sit somewhere quiet, and if it feels natural, keep a copy of the prayer in your hand or on your phone. Pausing after each sentence gives God room to bring things to mind that you had not planned to mention.

You might also pray this with your father if he is willing, or ask a friend, sibling, or pastor to pray it with you on his behalf. Prayer shared among people who love him often carries a particular weight, and it reminds everyone involved that the burden is not yours alone to hold.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your father and keep him. May the Lord make his face shine upon him and be gracious to him. May he know the peace of God that surpasses understanding, and may he rest today in the assurance that he is loved by the One who made him.
