This is a written prayer for anyone who wants to serve others with a willing heart, whether that means volunteering at church, caring for an aging parent, showing up for a neighbor, or working a job where people depend on your patience. Pray it in the morning before the day’s needs begin, or on the drive to a place where you know you will be asked to give more than you feel you have. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your situation calls for them.

Christian Prayer for Serving Others

Lord, you served us first, and you did it without keeping a tally. Thank you for the example of Jesus, who knelt to wash his friends’ feet and gave his life for people who did not deserve it. I come to you because I want to serve others in that same spirit, and I know my own heart tends toward keeping score, wanting thanks, or quietly resenting the people who take without asking. Search me and show me where I have made service about me.

Give me eyes to notice the person in front of me, the one who is tired, lonely, or quietly struggling and not saying so. Make me generous with my time, patient when I am interrupted, and honest when I need to say no so that I can say yes with a whole heart later. Where I am stretched thin, supply what I lack. Where I am tempted to burn out or to rescue everyone, teach me to rest in you and to trust that you are the one who ultimately carries the weight. Let my hands be useful and my words be kind. Let the people I serve see something of you in how I treat them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am about to be needed again. Give me a servant’s heart for the next hour. Open my eyes to the person who needs help, soften my irritation, and remind me that I am serving you when I serve them. Keep me from pride and from giving out of fear. Use my small efforts for your good, and help me rest in the fact that you see what I do. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to show you whose burden you can help carry this week. Name the specific person or situation, and ask for the willingness to step in without waiting to be thanked.

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking Jesus that his service was the pattern for ours. Ask him to make your service look more like his, given freely and aimed at the good of others rather than your own standing.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by confessing the places where you protect your own interests first. Ask God to help you look outward, noticing what others need before you decide what you want to do.

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to reveal the gifts he has given you. Then ask him to use those gifts to serve the people in your life, and to help you take each one as a trust rather than a possession.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking Jesus to help you see him in the people you serve. Ask that this awareness would make you gentle with the hungry, the stranger, and the one who is hard to love.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the full prayer early in the day, before your phone and your inbox begin to set your priorities. Sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee works well, or a few minutes in the car before you walk into work or into a family visit. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a dish towel, a pen, or the list of names of people you are caring for, so that the prayer becomes connected to the tasks you are about to do.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you. A spouse, a friend from your small group, or a fellow volunteer can read the prayer aloud while you listen, or each of you can take a paragraph. Praying together keeps the focus on God’s strength rather than your own, and it reminds you that you are part of a body of people who serve one another rather than a lone caretaker carrying everything.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who served us with patience and love give you strength for every good work set before you today. May he guard your heart from bitterness, refill what has been poured out, and let the people you serve leave a little more hopeful than they arrived. May you be faithful in small things and rest securely in the God who sees.
