This night prayer is for people whose work keeps them awake while others sleep, such as nurses, security guards, bakers, truck drivers, emergency dispatchers, and shift workers in warehouses and factories. Pray it at the start of a shift, during a quiet break, or as you come home in the early morning hours. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Those Working at Night

Lord, you do not sleep, and you watch over your people in the dark hours when the rest of the world is still. Thank you for the work you have given me tonight. Be near me in the long stretches between tasks, when my eyes are heavy and my thoughts drift. Keep my mind clear and my hands steady, so that what I do is done with care, and so that no one under my watch is harmed by my mistakes.

I bring you the people I will meet tonight: the patients, passengers, coworkers, and strangers who depend on someone being awake. Give me patience with the difficult moments and kindness toward those who are frightened, tired, or alone. Guard my body from exhaustion, and help me eat and rest in ways that honor the body you made. When the night feels endless, remind me that morning is coming and that you are already there.

Protect my going and my coming. Watch over my drive home, my walk to the car, and the rooms where my family sleeps while I am gone. Let my rest tomorrow be real, and let the peace I need find me when the shift ends. Thank you that I am never working alone, because you are with me in every hour. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am awake and working tonight, and I need you right now. Steady my hands and clear my mind. Watch over the people I serve and the people waiting for me at home. Give me strength for the hours left and rest when the shift is done. Thank you for keeping watch when I cannot. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel the strain of staying alert hour after hour. Ask God to be the one who keeps watch, so that your own vigilance does not have to carry everything alone.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this as you end your shift and head toward sleep. Thank God that safety and rest come from him, and ask him to give you a peaceful sleep when you finally lie down.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Offer this to God when the demands of work feel overwhelming. Admit that you cannot earn your rest through effort alone, and trust him to provide what your body and family need.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when the night feels long and the morning seems far away. Thank God that his mercy is renewed each day, and ask him to help you meet the coming light with fresh hope.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this invitation to Jesus at the end of a draining shift. Name the weariness you carry, and ask him to give you the rest that his presence brings.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment in your shift, such as a break in the staff room, a pause between calls, or a short walk around the building. Keep your hands busy if that helps you focus, perhaps holding a cup of tea or resting a hand on your work station as you speak. If you are praying at home after a late shift, sit in a chair by a window and read the prayer slowly before going to bed.

Consider praying this prayer with a coworker, a spouse, or a friend who also works nights. Ask them to pray for you, and take turns naming the people you each care for. Keeping a small card with the prayer in your locker or bag can help you return to it whenever the hours feel heavy.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep watch over you through every hour of this night. May he steady your hands, sharpen your mind, and guard your body from harm. May he bring you home safely and give you rest that refreshes you for the day ahead.
