This evening prayer is for the worried, for the person who lies down at night with a mind that will not stop running through tomorrow’s list and last week’s conversations. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after the dishes are done, or in the car before you go inside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries into the same shape.

Evening Prayer for the Worried

Lord, the day is ending and I am still carrying things I was never meant to carry alone. I keep turning over the money that has to stretch until payday, the phone call I have not returned, the test results I am waiting on, and the quiet fear that I am failing the people who depend on me. My thoughts go in circles, and my body does not know how to stop. I bring every one of these to you now, one by one, and I set them down on your table.

Father, you know how many hours I have spent staring at the ceiling in the dark. You know the questions I cannot answer and the what-ifs that show up uninvited. Help me to stop trying to solve tomorrow tonight. Let the unfinished things stay unfinished until morning. Quiet the replay of arguments and worst-case scenarios, and remind me that you are awake and attentive while I rest.

Thank you for the ordinary gifts of this day: the warm cup in my hands, the sound of someone I love in the next room, the work that got done, and the kindness I received when I did not expect it. Keep me, Lord, through the night. Guard the house, guard my sleep, and guard my heart from fear as I close my eyes. Let me wake to a new morning with the strength I need for one day at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worried and I cannot fix it tonight. I hand you the thing that keeps me awake and the people I am afraid for. Hold what I cannot hold. Settle my mind and let my body rest. Thank you for today, and keep me safe until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse describes a deliberate choice to rest because God is the one keeping watch. As you pray it, name the specific worry and tell God that you are going to lie down in his care rather than in your anxiety.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from the command not to be anxious to the practice of bringing requests to God with thanksgiving. Pray this slowly, listing your concerns and then naming one thing you are grateful for before you finish.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of the restless effort of working through the night and God giving rest to those he loves. Use it to release the habit of striving, and ask God to show you where you have been carrying work that was never yours.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter invites the reader to cast every anxiety onto God because he cares. Pray this by picturing yourself physically setting each worry down, one at a time, and leaving it there for the night.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with a mind that stays fixed on God. When your thoughts start racing, return to this verse and pray it slowly, letting the words slow your breathing and steady your attention.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time in the evening, after the last task of the day and before you reach for your phone. Sit somewhere quiet, such as the edge of your bed or a chair by a lamp, and keep a pen and paper nearby. If a worry surfaces while you pray, write it down in a few words so you can stop rehearsing it in your head and return to God.

Invite someone you trust to pray this with you, especially a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who also lies awake with concerns. Hearing another person speak these words can loosen the knot in your chest. You might also keep a printed copy on your nightstand so the prayer is there on the nights when you cannot find your own words.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your sleep be near to you tonight and steady your heart. May the worries that have followed you through the day loosen their grip as you rest. May you wake to morning light knowing that you were held, and that the God who never sleeps has been faithful all through the dark.
