This is a short prayer for a farewell gathering, the kind of evening when a colleague is leaving, a family is moving away, or a friend is heading out on a new road. It is meant to be prayed before the first words of goodbye, while the room is still full and the hugs have not yet started. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Short Prayers for a Farewell Gathering
Lord, you have been in this room long before any of us arrived, and you know every person standing in it. Some of us are grateful and some of us are sad, and some of us do not yet know what we feel. Be near to the one who is leaving. Steady their heart as they step toward whatever comes next, whether that is a new city, a new job, or a season we cannot yet see. Give them courage for the unfamiliar and peace in the long drive or the quiet first night in a strange place.
Be near to those who stay behind as well. Some of us will miss the daily rhythm of being together, the coffee in the break room, the phone call that always came on Thursdays. Comfort the empty chairs and the half-finished conversations. Help us to keep our promises to write, to visit, and to pray for one another even when the distance grows. Let this goodbye be a doorway and not a wall, so that we remain connected in you, whatever the miles between us. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, we give this person to you as they go. Go before them, walk beside them, and wait for them at the end of each road. Hold the ones who are sad to see them leave, and let them feel your nearness in the quiet moments. Thank you for the years we have shared, and help us trust that you are still at work in every goodbye. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer just before the formal goodbyes begin, while people are still holding their drinks and finding their coats. If you have a moment alone beforehand, such as in the car on the way over or standing in the hallway, read it quietly to yourself first. It helps to hold a small thing in your hands while you pray, such as a card you have written, a cup of tea, or the hand of the person who is leaving.
If you are the one leading the gathering, invite a friend or family member to read the short version aloud, so the words are shared rather than spoken by one voice alone. You might ask everyone to bow their heads or simply pause together. Afterward, give the departing person a copy of the prayer written out, so they can return to it on their first lonely evening in the new place.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go with you wherever you are sent, and may his peace settle on you in every strange room and every long night. May the people who love you carry you in their prayers, and may you carry them in yours. Go in grace, and know that you are held.
