This prayer is for the times when life is hard and the weight feels heavier than you can carry alone. Pray it when sleep won’t come, when a diagnosis or a bill or a broken relationship is pressing on you, or when you simply don’t have words of your own. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own concerns into the spaces between the lines.

Prayer When Life Is Hard

Lord, you see me in this. You see the tiredness that sits in my shoulders when I wake up, the list of worries I carry into every room, and the quiet fear I don’t always say out loud. I bring you the things I can name: the job that feels uncertain, the phone call I keep dreading, the body that isn’t cooperating, the person I love who is hurting and whom I cannot fix. I bring you the things I can’t name too, the low hum of dread that follows me from one hour to the next.

I confess that I often try to hold all of this myself. I rehearse conversations, I plan for the worst, and I wear myself out trying to control what is not mine to control. Teach me to set that down. Help me remember that you are not surprised by anything that has happened today, and that nothing I face has ever caught you off guard. Steady my thoughts when they race. Give me enough light for the next step, even when I cannot see the whole road.

Be near to me in this hard season. Give me rest that is real, not just a pause before the next crisis. Surround the people I am praying for with your care, and give me the wisdom to ask for help when I need it. Let my weakness become a place where your strength is seen. I trust you with what I don’t understand. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am struggling right now. You know exactly what this moment feels like. Hold me steady, quiet my fear, and give me the next right thing to do. I don’t need to have everything figured out. I only need to know you are here, and I do. Help me breathe, help me keep going, and help me rest in your presence for this minute. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

When life is hard, this verse reminds you where to look first. Pray it slowly, naming God as your refuge, and ask him to become real to you in the middle of whatever is pressing on you today.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Use this verse to tell God exactly where your heart is broken or bruised. Ask him to come close in that specific place, trusting that he does not keep his distance from people who are hurting.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this as an invitation. Bring your exhaustion, your worry, and your heavy load to Jesus, and pray that he would give you the rest your body and soul are asking for.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage shape your anxious prayers. Turn each worry into a specific request, thank God for what he has already given, and ask for the calm that guards your heart and mind.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel too weak to continue. Admit your limits honestly to God, and ask him to show you that his grace is enough for the very thing you cannot manage on your own.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it easiest to pray this prayer early in the morning, before the day’s demands begin, or late at night, once the house is quiet. Sit somewhere you can be still, such as a chair by a window or the edge of your bed. If your hands feel restless, hold a cup of tea, press your palms together, or rest one hand over your heart as you speak. Let the physical act anchor you while your mind wanders.

You do not have to pray the whole thing at once. Read one paragraph, pause, and let the words settle before continuing. If you are praying on behalf of someone else, such as a spouse, child, or friend who is struggling, you can speak their names into the prayer and ask God to meet them where they are. Consider asking a trusted friend or pastor to pray it with you, so you are not carrying the weight alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be your refuge when the ground shifts beneath you. May he give you rest for your weary body and peace for your restless mind. May you know, even in the hardest hours, that you are seen, held, and not forgotten. Walk gently today, and trust that the same God who sustained his people through long nights is with you now.
