This is a Christian prayer for my parents, written for the moments when you love them deeply and do not know what to say to God on their behalf. You can pray it in the morning before the phone rings, in the evening after a hard conversation, or whenever worry about their health, their marriage, their faith or their future rises up in you. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.
Christian Prayer for My Parents
Father, thank you for the mother and father you have given me, and for every way they have carried me into the life I have now. I come to you on their behalf because I cannot be everywhere they are, and I cannot fix every ache in their bodies or every fear in their hearts. Watch over their health, Lord. Be near them in the doctor’s office, in the long nights when sleep will not come, and in the quiet moments when they wonder whether anyone notices how tired they are.
Care for their marriage and their friendships, and give them patience with one another when the days grow heavy. Where there is distance between us, bring us back together in honesty and kindness. Where they are carrying money worries, a job that wears them down, or grief they have never fully spoken, meet them there and give them enough of what they need for today. Let them know they are not alone, even when no one is in the room with them.
Above all, draw them closer to you. Strengthen their faith where it is young and restore it where it has grown weary, and let them see your goodness in ordinary things. Help me to honor them, to speak to them with gentleness, and to trust you with the years ahead that I cannot see. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my parents are on my mind right now. Hold them in your hands today, guard their health and their hearts, and give them rest where they are weary. Be near them when I am not, and let them feel your peace in small, unexpected ways. Thank you that you love them more than I ever could. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray for their parents at a set time, such as during the drive to work, while the coffee brews in the morning, or just before sleep. Keep a copy of this prayer in your phone or on a card in your wallet so you can read it while waiting in a hospital hallway or sitting in a parked car after a phone call. Some people hold a photograph of their parents in their hands as they pray, which can turn a general request into a face-to-face one.
If you have siblings, friends or a church small group, invite them to pray this prayer with you and to add their own names and needs. Shared prayer can lighten the burden of worry and remind you that your parents are held by more than one set of hands. Consider telling your parents you are praying for them, too. Hearing it from you may open a door to a conversation you have been waiting to have.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless your mother and father and keep them, and may his face shine upon them with grace and peace. May they feel his nearness in every season, and may you, their child, know that your love and your prayers are a gift to them and to God.
