This night prayer for love and unity is for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the conversations, tensions and small failures are still fresh. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you go in, or on the edge of the bed with the lamp still on. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where the lines do not fit your evening.
Night Prayer for Love and Unity
Father, the day is closing and I bring it to you as it is. I think of the people I love most, and I think of the ones I have found hard to love today. I am sorry for the sharp word I spoke at dinner, for the eye roll I did not bother to hide, and for the times I wanted to be right more than I wanted to be kind. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me to receive that forgiveness without carrying it around all night.
Knit our hearts together, Lord, the ones in this home and the ones who are far away. Where there is distance between us, bring a bridge. Where there is misunderstanding, give patience to both sides. Let the love you have poured into me spill over into the people I will see tomorrow, the coworker I find irritating, the family member who keeps bringing up old wounds, and the neighbor I barely know. Give us unity that is more than politeness, a peace that is real because it rests on you. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired, and I know I have not loved as well as I could today. Forgive me, and draw my heart close to the people I live with and the ones I struggle to like. Bind us together in your love, so that we can be at peace with one another tonight and wake up ready to be kind. Let your peace settle over this house while we sleep. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 133:1
See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!
(WEB)
This short psalm celebrates brothers and sisters living together in unity, and it is a good verse to pray over your own household before sleep. Ask God to make the people you love dwell together in harmony, and name each one as you pray.
Colossians 3:14
Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
(WEB)
Paul describes love as the thing that binds everything else together. Pray that love would be the garment you put on each morning and the cord that holds your relationships together when they strain under the day’s pressure.
Ephesians 4:2-3
2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(WEB)
These verses name humility, gentleness and patience as the means of keeping unity. Pray for each of these qualities in turn, asking God to show you where you have been short on them today.
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…
(WEB)
Paul lists what love does and does not do, from patience to not keeping a record of wrongs. Read it slowly and ask God which line you most need to live out tomorrow, then let that line be the last thing you think about tonight.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
David names the peace of God as the reason he can lie down and sleep. Pray that same peace over you and your family, trusting that rest is a gift God gives and not a reward you must earn.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it at a set time each night, such as after the lights go off or just before you climb into bed, so the habit becomes a bridge between the day and sleep. If you share a home, you might sit together on the couch and take turns reading a line each, or stand at the bedroom door and speak the prayer over the people asleep down the hall. Keeping a pen beside your bed works well too: write down the name of the person you are most at odds with, and pray for them by name as you finish.
Use your hands while you pray. Hold a loved one’s hand, rest a palm on your child’s door frame, or press your fingers together as a small reminder that you are binding yourself to God and to the people you wish to be at peace with. If you pray alone, consider inviting a spouse, friend or housemate to pray the same words with you on the phone, so unity is something you practice across distance as well as in the same room.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight wrap you in a love that does not run out. May he settle the quarrels of the day, mend what is torn between you and those you care for, and give you a sleep that is deep and unafraid. As you rest, may you wake in the morning ready to love well.
