This evening prayer for caregivers is written for the close of a long day spent looking after someone else, whether that is a parent, a spouse, a child with special needs, or a friend in declining health. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before going inside, or as you sit down at last after the final medication has been given. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit better.

Evening Prayer for Caregivers

Lord, the day is ending, and I am still carrying it. I think of the early alarm, the lifting and the waiting, the phone calls I had to make, and the moments when I did not know what to do next. I think of the things I did not finish and the times my patience ran thin. Please receive all of it. Take the weight I have been holding in my hands and in my heart, and set it down in your presence where I no longer have to manage it.

Thank you for the strength you gave me when I had none of my own. Thank you for the small mercies in the middle of the hard hours, a moment of quiet, a kind word, a body that rested when I needed it to. Watch over the one I care for tonight. Give them comfort in their pain and peace in their restlessness. Guard their sleep and mine. Let the night bring rest instead of worry, and let me wake tomorrow with enough grace for what it will ask of me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am giving you the day that is ending. Take what I could not carry and what I got wrong. Hold the person I care for tonight, and hold me too. Give us both rest in your keeping, and help me begin again in the morning with what you provide. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as an admission that you were never meant to hold everything up alone. Thank God that rest is a gift he gives to those he loves, not a reward you must earn by finishing every task first.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Bring the exhaustion you feel and name it to Jesus, asking him to take the load you were never designed to bear by yourself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to entrust the night to God’s watchfulness. As you settle in, pray that the one you care for and you yourself will be kept safe while you sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words with gratitude for mercies that begin again each morning. Ask God to renew your strength for tomorrow so that you can meet the day without carrying yesterday’s failures.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel completely spent. Ask the Lord to give you strength where your own has run out, trusting that his power works most clearly in weariness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house has gone quiet, often after the last task of the evening and before you check your phone again. Sit somewhere you can be still, such as a favorite chair or the edge of the bed. If your hands are restless, hold a warm mug, a rosary, or simply rest them open on your knees. Let the physical stillness help your mind follow the words.

If someone else in your household or circle of friends knows what you are facing, ask them to pray it with you or over you on a night when you are too worn out to speak. A spouse, a sibling, or a pastor who visits can carry this prayer for you, and you can return the favor when they need it.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord grant you a night of deep and untroubled rest. May he keep watch over the one you love while you sleep, and keep watch over you as well. May the faithfulness that meets you each morning meet you again tomorrow, and may you wake knowing you are held.
