This night prayer is for anyone who has gone to bed carrying the weight of a career change, whether you are leaving a job, waiting on an offer, or trying to decide what comes next. Pray it in the evening, once the day’s work is put away, and before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for a Career Change

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the question that has followed me home again. I do not know yet whether this change is right, or how it will work out. I have looked at the numbers, the timing, and the people who depend on me, and I still lie awake wondering if I have chosen wisely. Tonight I set that question down in your hands. You already see the path I cannot see from here.

Father, I confess that I want certainty before I take the next step. I want to know the salary, the schedule, the title, and whether my skills will be enough. Teach me to trust you without needing every answer first. Quiet the part of me that replays the what-ifs at two in the morning. Remind me that the work I did today was faithful, even if I do not yet know where it leads, and that my worth does not rise or fall with a job title.

Thank you for the gifts you have given me, and for the people who have encouraged me along the way. Watch over my sleep tonight. Guard my family, my home, and my mind while I rest. When I wake, give me clear thinking for the decisions in front of me, and a steady heart for whatever the new season brings. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is full of this career decision. Calm my thoughts and help me rest in your care. Show me the next faithful step, and let that be enough for tonight. Keep my family safe and let me sleep without fear of tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, asking God to give you the rest that comes from trusting him with your future. It reminds you that peace at night does not depend on having the new job settled.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you are tempted to rely on your own calculations about the change, bring those plans to God and ask him to make your path straight. Pray it as a release of your need to control every outcome.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Let this verse speak to the exhaustion of carrying career worries every day. Name the weariness out loud to Jesus and ask him to give you the rest he promises.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over your anxiety about income, identity, and direction. Pray with thanksgiving for what you already have, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this as a request for protection through the night, for yourself and for anyone affected by your decision. It is a reminder that the one who watches over Israel does not sleep, and he is watching over you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place near your bed, and pray at the end of the day rather than in the middle of scrolling or checking messages about the job. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your hands open in your lap can help the words settle. If your mind wanders, return to one line and let it slow you down.

You may also invite a spouse, a friend, or a roommate to pray this with you, taking turns with a sentence each. Someone else speaking your concerns back to God can lift a weight you have been carrying alone. Keep a notebook beside the bed so you can jot down anything that comes to mind, then leave it there and pray it through.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight and clarity in the morning. May he go before you into every interview, conversation, and decision still ahead, and may you find your security in him alone. Sleep well, and wake to his faithfulness.
