This prayer is for the times when you feel depleted in body, mind or spirit and need God to restore what daily life has drained. Pray it in the early morning before the day pulls at you, in the middle of a long afternoon, or at night when sleep will not come. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit your situation better.

Prayer for Rest and Renewal

Lord, I come to you tired. My mind keeps running through the list of things I have not finished, and my body feels heavier than it should. Some days I cannot tell whether I am weary from work, from worry, from caring for others, or from simply carrying too much for too long. I confess that I have tried to fix all of it myself, and I am worn out from that effort. Please meet me where I am, not where I think I should be.

Restore what has been spent in me. Quiet the noise in my head so I can hear you. Give my body the sleep it needs and my heart the peace it has been missing. Renew my strength for the tasks you have given me, and loosen my grip on the ones you never asked me to hold. Teach me to receive rest as a gift rather than a reward I must earn. Let your steady presence be enough for this hour, and let it grow into enough for the days ahead. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am running on empty. Refill me with your peace, quiet the anxious thoughts that will not let me rest, and give me strength for what is in front of me right now. Help me breathe slowly and trust that you are holding the parts of my life I cannot manage. Renew me, Lord, one breath at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the picture of green pasture and still water shape your prayer. Ask the Shepherd to lead you into the kind of rest that is not only physical but also a settling of your soul.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to Jesus in the words of this invitation. Name the particular burdens you carry, then ask him to show you what he is asking you to set down and what yoke he wants you to take up instead.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as a request for strength when your own reserves have run dry. Ask the Lord to give power to your weakness and to renew your energy so that you can keep going without losing heart.

Psalm 62:1-2

1 My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress— I will never be greatly shaken.

(WEB)

Use this psalm to settle your heart into stillness before God. Say the words slowly, and ask him to be your rock and refuge in the places where you feel most unsteady.

Exodus 33:14

He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

(WEB)

Let this promise of God’s presence shape your request. Ask him to go with you through the day, so that your rest comes from knowing he is near rather than from the absence of pressure.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place where you can sit or lie down without interruption, even if only for five minutes. Read the prayer once through silently, then aloud, pausing after each sentence to let the words sink in. If your hands feel restless, rest them open on your lap or hold a cup of something warm, letting the physical stillness support the stillness you are asking God to bring to your heart.

This prayer can also be shared. Pray it with a spouse or friend at the end of a hard day, or ask someone to pray it over you when you no longer have the energy to form the words. You might return to it each morning for a week, noticing where God has begun to answer, and adjust the wording as your needs change.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made the sun and the stars also make room in your schedule for rest. May he steady your breathing, lighten what you carry, and fill your weary places with fresh strength. May you wake tomorrow knowing that you were held tonight, and may his peace guard your heart and mind in the days ahead.
