This short prayer for a sick friend is written for the moments when you want to bring someone’s illness before God but do not know where to begin. You can pray it aloud as written, at a bedside, in the car, or over the phone before you hang up. You can also use it as a starting point and add your friend’s name, the specific symptoms, or the fears you know they carry.

Short Prayer for a Sick Friend

Lord, you see my friend in this illness, and nothing about their condition is hidden from you. You know the pain they wake up to, the tiredness that makes simple tasks feel heavy, and the worry that keeps them awake at night. I ask you to be near them today. Give them rest where their body is weak, and steady their heart where their mind is racing. Be the doctor’s wisdom, the nurse’s patience, and the quiet presence in the room when no one else is there.

Father, I also ask for healing, and I trust you with the timing and the shape of that healing. If it is your will to restore their strength, let them feel it soon. If the road is longer, remind them that you have not left them, and give them enough grace for each hour as it comes. Keep their family and their caregivers strong, and help them not to carry more than they were meant to carry alone.

Lord, I thank you for this friend and for every good thing you have given us together. Hold them close, comfort them in their weakness, and let them know they are loved, both by you and by those who are praying for them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is sick and I am asking you to be with them right now. Ease their pain, calm their fears, and give them the rest their body needs. Surround them with people who care for them well. Heal them if it is your good will, and carry them if it is not yet time. Thank you that they are never beyond your reach. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

This psalm pictures God sustaining a person on their sickbed. Pray it over your friend by asking God to hold them up when they have no strength of their own, and to restore them from their illness.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

This verse names God as the one who heals broken hearts and binds up wounds. When you pray it, bring not only the physical sickness but also the emotional hurt that often comes with long illness.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This promise speaks to fear and weakness at the same time. Pray it for your friend when they feel frightened, asking God to remind them that he is with them and will strengthen them.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

James describes the church gathering around the sick in prayer. Use this passage to pray that your friend would feel supported by a community of believers and that prayer would be offered for them in faith.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul learned that God’s grace is enough even in weakness. Pray this verse for your friend when their strength is failing, asking that God’s grace would meet them in the places where they feel least able to cope.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, perhaps early in the morning or just before bed, when you can speak slowly and without rushing. If you are sitting with your friend, you might hold their hand or rest a hand gently on their arm as you pray, so that the words also carry your presence. If you cannot be there in person, keep a copy of the prayer on your phone and read it aloud where you are.

Invite someone else to pray the same words, such as a spouse, a family member, or another friend who knows your friend well. Shared prayer can help the sick person feel carried by many people at once, and it can also keep you from feeling that everything rests on your shoulders.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be close to your friend in this season of illness, giving them rest, peace, and strength for each day. May they feel the warmth of people who love them, and may they know, even on the hardest nights, that they are held by a faithful God.
