This night prayer is for a nurse who has worked a long shift and is ready to hand the day to God before sleep. Pray it at the end of a shift, in the car on the drive home, or in bed after the house has gone quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your day feels different.

Night Prayer for a Nurse

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to You as it was: the patients I checked on, the medications I double-checked, the families I could not comfort the way I wanted to, and the moments when I was tired and short with people I love. Some of it I did well and some of it I did poorly, and I ask You to receive all of it. Forgive me where I fell short, and let Your mercy be bigger than my mistakes. Where I was careful, thank You for steadying my hands and sharpening my mind.

Be with the patients who are sleeping tonight and the ones who are not. Watch over the ones who are frightened, in pain, or struggling to breathe, and give the staff on the next shift clear minds and good hands. Guard my own body from exhaustion that goes too deep. Let my sleep be real rest rather than a restless replay of charts and alarms. If my thoughts start running ahead to tomorrow, quiet them and remind me that I only have to carry one shift at a time.

Thank You for the work You have given me, even on the days it feels heavy. Remind me that caring for others is a form of service to You. Keep my home safe while I am away from it, bless the people who wait for me, and wake me in the morning with enough strength for what lies ahead. Into Your hands I commit my rest tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am done for today, and I give You what is left of my strength. Forgive what I got wrong, receive what I did with care, and watch over the patients on this floor tonight. Guard my sleep and give me rest I can trust. Keep my family safe, and wake me ready for the next shift. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are lying down and your mind will not stop. Thank God that rest is not something you earn by finishing every task, but something He gives to the weary.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to lay down the belief that everything depends on you. Ask God to remind you that He cares for the patients and for you, and that you do not hold the whole ward together alone.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you come off a demanding shift. Bring the weight you have carried all day and name it to Jesus, asking Him to give you the rest He promises.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray these lines over your sleep and over the patients who are awake through the night. Ask the One who does not slumber to keep watch while you rest.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Give thanks with this passage for the mercies that begin again each morning. Ask God to meet you with fresh compassion when you return to work and to show you His faithfulness in the next shift.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment that is yours, such as the quiet minutes after you park at home or the last few minutes before you turn off the light. If your hands are still tired, rest them open on your lap or hold a warm cup of tea while you pray. Speaking the prayer out loud, even softly, can help you slow down after a loud and fast-moving day.

If you share a room or a home with someone who is sleeping, pray silently with the same words. You can also ask a friend, partner, or fellow nurse to pray this with you by phone or over coffee before a shift. Having someone else speak these words can be a comfort when you are too drained to find your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the sleeping and the waking go with this nurse tonight. May He cover her with peace, steady her heart after a hard day, and give her rest that is deep and unbroken. May He guard her home, her family, and every patient in her care, and bring her back refreshed when morning comes.
