This prayer is for the night before an exam, when your mind keeps replaying material you have already studied and the morning feels close. Pray it at bedtime, sitting on the edge of your bed or kneeling beside it, after your notes are packed away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for an Upcoming Exam

Lord, the day is ending and my head is full of formulas, dates and questions I am not sure I can answer. Thank you for the hours I spent studying, for the teacher who explained things patiently, and for the friend who quizzed me over lunch. Thank you that I did not have to do any of it alone. I bring you the knowledge I have gathered and the parts I still find confusing, and I ask you to let what I have learned stay with me when I need it.

Quiet my thoughts now. Where I am worried about failing, remind me that my worth does not rise or fall with a single grade. Where I am tempted to cram until the last minute, give me the wisdom to rest instead. Let my sleep be deep and unbroken, and let me wake clear-minded and calm. Guard my body and my heart through the night, and steady my nerves for the morning. Whatever happens tomorrow, keep me honest, keep me kind, and help me do my best without fear taking over. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious about tomorrow. Settle my mind and let me sleep. Bring to memory what I have truly learned, and let go of what I cannot control. Thank you for being with me in this and in every room I walk into. Give me peace tonight and courage in the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Before you close your eyes, pray this verse slowly and let it become a statement of trust. Naming God as the one who keeps you safe lets you hand over the night, and the test, to him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to name each worry you are carrying, one at a time, and bring it to God in prayer. Notice that the peace it describes comes as a gift, not as something you produce by trying harder.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel the urge to control every outcome. Ask God to direct your steps tomorrow, including the moments when you feel unsure of what to write or how to answer.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Repeat this promise when fear rises in the dark. Ask God to remind you that he is with you in the exam room as surely as he is in your bedroom tonight.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your tiredness to Jesus in this verse, not only your stress about the test. Ask him to give you rest, the kind that lets your body and mind stop striving for one night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about thirty minutes before you normally go to bed, once your study materials are put away and the lights are dim. A quiet corner, your bedside, or a seat by a window works well. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a pen, your room key, or a warm cup of tea, so your body has something to settle into along with your mind.

If someone you trust is also awake or praying for you, ask them to pray this with you, or to pray it over you in their own words. Tell them the exam time so they can pray for you at that hour. Remember that you can return to this prayer if you wake in the night, and that a few honest sentences to God are enough.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps you keep your sleep, your memory and your heart this night. May he steady your hands and calm your thoughts when morning comes. May you walk into the exam room knowing you are known, loved and not alone. Rest now, for the one who watches over you does not sleep.
