This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day when discouragement has been heavy, whether it came from work that went nowhere, a relationship that feels strained, or a quiet sense that you are falling short. Pray it in the last minutes before sleep, reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point and speaking in your own words. Either way, it hands the day and its weight to God before you lie down.

Bedtime Prayer for Overcoming Discouragement

Father, the day is ending and I am tired in a way that sleep alone will not fix. I carried things I did not finish, words I wish I had not said, and worries that kept coming back when I wanted to set them down. Some of what I feel is about my work and my money, and some of it is about whether I am failing the people I love. I do not want to take that weight into the night, so I am placing it in your hands now.

Thank you that you saw every hour of this day, including the ones no one else noticed. Thank you for the small mercies I almost missed: a kind word, a meal, a moment of quiet. Where discouragement has told me that nothing I do matters, remind me that you are working even when I cannot see the result. Lift the heaviness from my chest and give me enough hope to wake up tomorrow willing to try again.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my mind from replaying the worst of the day, and keep the fears I have not yet named from taking shape in the dark. Let me rest in the knowledge that I am known and loved by you, not because I have earned it, but because you are faithful. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am discouraged and I am too tired to say much more. Take what I could not carry today. Remind me that you are near, that I am not forgotten, and that tomorrow is a new day you have already prepared. Give me rest tonight and enough courage to begin again in the morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when your soul feels cast down, and let the psalmist’s question become your own. Then answer it out loud by naming one reason you still hope in God tonight, even a small one.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with the specific ways your heart feels broken or crushed. Ask God to draw near to exactly those places before you fall asleep.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse to admit how spent you feel and to ask God for the strength you cannot produce yourself. Let it shift your focus from your own reserves to his.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as a reminder that God’s kindness has not run out, even after a hard day. Thank him specifically for his mercy that renews each morning.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to Jesus in prayer, naming what you are carrying. Ask him to give you the rest he offers, so you can lay down the burden and sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Set aside the last few minutes before you turn off the light, ideally in the same place each night, such as the edge of your bed or a chair near the window. Keep a pen and paper nearby so you can write down any worry that rises while you pray, then place the paper somewhere out of sight. Pausing to open your hands, palms up, can help you physically let go of what you have been holding all day.

If you share a home, consider praying this with a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is old enough to understand. Taking turns to name one hard thing and one good thing from the day can turn a solitary prayer into a shared act of trust. If you are alone, you might call or text a friend and ask them to pray it with you over the phone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May his peace settle where discouragement has been, and may you wake to find that his mercy has met you in the dark. Rest well, knowing you are held. Amen.
